Poker is a card game that can be played by two to 14 players. The object is to win the “pot,” which is the sum of all bets made by all players in a single deal. The pot may be won by either having the highest-ranking poker hand or by making a bet that no other player calls.
The game starts with each player receiving 2 cards face down. Once everyone has checked for blackjack (a pair of Aces) the betting begins. Each player, in turn, has the choice to call the bet, raise it or fold.
If a player raises the bet, then he must place into the pot enough chips (representing money) to call the bet of every player before him. If he cannot make this commitment, then he must drop out of the betting and forfeit any bets that he has made.
Unlike other casino games, poker requires players to look beyond their own cards and think about what cards other players might have. By analyzing an opponent’s previous behavior, players can make smarter bets based on what they think their opponent will do under pressure. This is a vital skill that will allow you to dominate the game.
